The PMU Registry

The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) Registry is a North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) initiative to provide a common location for documenting the configuration of devices making phasor measurements on the North American electric power system.

The primary purpose of the PMU Registry is to provide a structure for mapping synchrophasor data from multiple substations and multiple utilities so that this data can be used as an integrated set of information with all parties knowing where and how the phasor measurements are taken. As a name server, one of the most important services of the PMU registry is provide attribute information about phasor measurements as based on a unique measurement key.

The PMU Registry does not contain synchrophasor data. It is service that provides other computing systems such as Phasor Data Concentrators metadata about devices that make synchrophasor measurements -- typically a dedicated PMU or a relay.

The types of metadata provided by the PMU Registry include device installation status, device make and model, device physical location, and the electrical location of the measurements made. The PMU Registry contains a unique key for every measurement. The registry can also store additional measurement keys that are used within utilities or regions that are formatted to support specific applications, data packaging, or communications standards.

As a simple example, if Transmission Owner A installs a new PMU, Regional Entity B will be informed when the PMU goes into service and will dynamically be provided the same configuration information as is used by Transmission Owner A. The value of the PMU Registry increases as additional Transmission Owners and Regional Entities are also made aware of this new phasor measurement information.

PMU Registry News
New! June 7, 2010 -- A production version of the PMU registry is available at https://www.naspi.net/. The test/development version remains available at https://naspi.tva.com/pmuregistry. Obtaining accounts to access either the production or test registry can be obtained by following the directions at the bottom of the panel to the left. For now, production accounts will be limited to PMU owners who wish to officially register their PMUs.

May 3, 2010 -- The NASPI PMU Registry is planned to "go live" June 1, 2010. Data entered into the registry after this date will become part of the production registry. This web site will remain available for use as a training and test tool. Data in this PMU *TEST* Registry will be deleted from time-to-time.

March 24, 2010 -- The PMU Registry was discussed at a NASPI sponsored webinar. (PDF 222KB).

February 24, 2010 -- The Beta Version of the PMU Registry has been made generally available for comment and review.

November 15, 2009 -- A Beta Version of the PMU Registry has been made available to the DNMTT for review and comment.
